As I have said before, life with a toddler and a baby is difficult, and some days are definitely worse than others. Yesterday started out as one of those days....
Zachary has been waking up at 6:30, which leaves both him and his parents tired. We have started letting him watch movies in the morning so that Neil and I can each get a shower and he theoretically doesn't get into much trouble. That theory is starting to fade, however. I had just gotten Daphne to sleep and I had a movie on for Zachary and I ran in to take a quick shower. I usually bring Daphne into the bathroom with me, but this time I just had her in her crib with the door locked. When I got out of the shower I could hear Zachary talking, but his voice was coming from a different direction than I thought it should be. About two seconds later, Daphne started crying and I realized that he was in her room. He had apparently unlocked her door, went into her room, climbed into her crib and un-velcroed her SwaddleMe. As he's climbing out of the crib he says to me "baby wake up!" I pulled him out of her room, but by then the damage had obviously been done and she screamed the whole time I was getting dressed.
Once Daphne is awake, she thinks it's time to eat and she doesn't take "wait" for an answer. I sat down to feed her, and I could hear the kitchen chair being dragged across the floor. I knew that Zachary was headed for trouble, but there wasn't anything that I could do about it right then. He got my keys and started making my car beep, which he thinks is great fun, and then apparently found a cough drop and thought that it was candy. I guess he didn't really like it, though, because soon he brought it in to me, all unwrapped and sticky. As I was finishing up and getting ready to leave the room, he ran ahead of me, shut the door and locked it! Most of our locks you can open with a coin or fingernail, but hers happens to be a key lock and I didn't have the key! I started to panic, but I yelled at him to unlock the door and luckily he did. At this point I was angry with him but trying not to laugh at the same time. I wanted to call my mom and tell her what he had done, but it was in the car. Daphne and I went out to get it, and Zachary slammed the garage door and locked that one!! All the other doors to my house were locked, so now I couldn't get into my house and my two year old was in there by himself. I started yelling at him to unlock the door again, but he was struggling with this one. Finally he got it unlocked and I was able to get inside, but boy was he in trouble. When your toddler has locked you out three times (he had locked himself into the bathroom earlier but that one wasn't a key lock) before 9:30 in the morning, you know it's going to be a long day!!! I called my mom and told her all that he had done, and she decided to come down and rescue me (well, more realistically she was rescuing him from my wrath) and spend the day with us. It was fun having her here and she was definitely a lifesaver, so thanks Mom! Now I'm off to go put keys in the rooms that I can potentially be locked into.....
